American Environmental Landfill is more than just a trash dump. Whether it is helping Oklahomans generate power through our waste-to-energy program or acting as the home to the American Therapeutic Riding Center (ATRC), we are consistently working hard to help better our community and the lives of those who reside here.

But, our effort doesn’t just stop there. When our owner Kenneth Burkett found out that the honeybee and Monarch butterfly populations in the region were dwindling, he stepped into action. The American Environmental Landfill site is home to thousands of bees and a field of milkweed specifically planted to help the butterflies thrive.

Often referred to as the Sand Springs landfill, American Environmental Landfill is a waste-to-energy program site. What does this mean and how does this affect those who live in the area?

Through a unique collection process utilizing a series of strategically placed wells, we capture the methane gas emitted from decomposing waste. Once the gas is collected, we convert it to electricity through three large generators. Then, we use electricity to power the homes of around 18,000 Green Country residents. We like to think of this as our way of energizing the future using the resources we have available to us at our Oklahoma landfill.

AEL has been named by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) as a leading landfill in the industry.

Why does this matter? Well, it means that we are good at what we do and that our operations are safe for our employees, neighbors, and the environment. These organizations are very important to our industry and their recognition is beneficial to our overall process.

Looking for a dump in Sand Springs that is open on Saturdays? Then you are in luck! American Environmental Landfill’s weekend hours are from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM. We do ask that you arrive by 2:30 PM to allow enough time for checking in and unloading your items. We are closed on Sundays.

Being open on Saturday is just another way our team works hard to ensure your convenience and satisfaction. We understand that sometimes weekend projects require a trip to the local dump, which we are happy to help you do.
